The 14th National Conference on Functional Linguistics
The Symposium to launch The Halliday-Hasan International Fund

The 14th National Conference on Functional Linguistics, with this year's theme titled The Making of Meaning: Grammar, Society and Consciousness, attracts more than 300 scholars and students to participate the four-day conference.


The first day of the conference is also an official launch ceremony for The Halliday-Hasan International Fund for the Study of Language and Other Systems of Meaning. The goal of the Fund is to promote research in language and other semiotic systems, with emphasis on the further development and application of Systemic Functional Linguistics.

Professor M.A.K. Halliday, a leading scholar in linguistics and one of the founders of the Fund, celebrates his 90th birthday in Beijing. To honour Prof. Halliday's 60 years of devotion to linguistics, a birthday party with cultural performances by students is organized by the Beijing Normal University.
