Abstract

Christian Matthiessen is Professor of Linguistics at Macquarie University of Australia. He is member of the Centre for Translation and Interpreting Research and the Centre for Language in Social Life of the Department of Linguistics of Macquarie University; and also member of the Systemic Meaning Modelling Group. He is the editor or author of a number of books, most recently Continuing Discourse on Language: A Functional Perspective (Volume 1) (co-edited with Ruqaiya Hasan and Jonathan J. Webster, Equinox 2005) and Introduction to Functional Grammar (co-edited with M.A.K. Halliday, Hodder Arnold 2004).

Adriana Pagano

Abstract

Adriana Pagano is Professor of Translation Studies at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), Belo Horizonte, Brazil. She is the Coordinator of LETRA ?Laboratory for Experimentation in Translation, at UFMG, where she conducts research on expertise and expert knowledge in translation and works towards the development of CORPRAT ?Corpus of Process for the Analysis of Translation. She has supervised several theses and dissertations on systemic functional approaches to translation and on an SFL-based comparative description of English, Spanish and Portuguese. She is currently working on a SFL approach to translation of popular science in Brazil, including subtitling for the deaf and audiodescription for the visually impaired of scientific documentaries.

Erich Steiner (also instructor at the Pre-Conference Institute)

Abstract

Erich Steiner, born 1954 in Heidelberg/ Germany, studied English and German Philology in Freiburg, Saarbrücken, Cardiff, Reading and London (GB), and has held posts in Saarbrücken, Luxembourg and Darmstadt. He has served as Head of Department, Pro-Dean and Dean at the University of Saarland in Saarbrücken, as well as received calls from several other universities. Since 1990, he has been Chair of English Linguistics and Translation Studies, Dept. of Applied Linguistics, Translating and Interpreting, University of Saarland, Saarbrücken. His major research interests include Functional Linguistics, Translation Theory and Comparative Linguistics, as well as Computational Linguistics. He has attracted major research projects from the Europaean Union (ESPRIT/ FRAMEWORK, LEONARDO, MINERVA) and from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG/ German Research Coucil). He has been Visiting Professor at Rice University, Houston/ Texas (1986), Visiting Professor at the University of Southern California/ Los Angeles (1988), Socrates Lecturer at Dublin City University (1998), and Visiting Professor several times at the University of Sydney, Macquarie University Sydney and the University of Technology, Sydney, as well as the University Oslo over the past 15 years. Abstract

Elke Teich is Professor of English Linguistics at Institut für Sprach- und Literaturwissenschaft, Technische Universität Darmstadt, Germany. She worked as a researcher in the KOMET project for text generation at the German National Research Centre for Information Technology, Institute for Integrated Publication and Information Systems, Darmstadt, Germany from 1990 to 1996.

Chunshen Zhu

Abstract

Chunshen Zhu received his PhD from the University of Nottingham, Britain and MA from Fujian Normal University, China. He taught at Fujian Normal University and the National University of Singapore before joining City University of Hong Kong in September 1998. He is currently serving as Programme Leader for the programme of MA in Translation and Interpretation. He is Member of the Committee for Translation Theory and Pedagogy, Translators' Association of China. His research interests include discourse/text and stylistic analysis for translation purposes; and the poetics of translation.
